Dear Hollywood: Quit Sucking
Aug. 18th, 2010 07:25 pmSo, I <3 Runaways. It's one of my favorite comic books ever. (Or it was when Brian K Vaughan was writing... since then it's been spotty to say the least.)
One of the things that's made Runaways so great has been its diverse cast. Which is why it's very upsetting that the casting call for the upcoming movie has caught the attention of racebending.com for not specifying that "girl #1", Nico Minoru, is Japanese-American, just "unconventionally beautiful" which is in itself insulting. "Girl #1" has me twitching, because it implies that names could change, since Nico's name is identifiable as Japanese. "Girl #3", Karolina Dean, who is blonde-haired and blue-eyed is described in the casting call as "conventionally beautiful".
"Boy 1", Alex Wilder, has been specified as African American, but of course (SPOILERS) he ends up being the villain.
I've been looking forward to this movie for a long time. I sincerely hope it's not ruined by boneheaded casting.
